Area students earn honors at math event

Eight Alexandria 6th grade teams competed in the Regional Math Masters Competition held in Alexandria Friday, March 13. Thirty teams attended the event, which was one of several held throughout the state for 6th grade math teams.

Eight Alexandria 6th grade teams competed in the Regional Math Masters Competition held in Alexandria Friday, March 13. Thirty teams attended the event, which was one of several held throughout the state for 6th grade math teams.

The competition included a fact drill round, three individual rounds and three team rounds.

Three Alexandria teams finished in the top 10, with several local students receiving individual honors.

Team competition

Lincoln Team #2: This team finished 1st, earning individual plaques and a team plaque. Members include Carl Branch, Max Jacobson, Tyler Kay, Mitchell Maday and Alyssa Welle.

Lincoln Team #1: This team finished 3rd, earning medallions and a team plaque. Members include Eric Branch, Leif Johnson, Bailey Serum, Cody Weisel and Madalyn Winger.

Washington: This team finished 10th. Members include Tristan Johnson, Kyle Pietrowski, Tyler Floding, Brooke Rinicker and Emma Pederson.

Two Voyager teams, teams from Carlos and Miltona and a team from St. Mary's School also participated in the event.

Individual competition

A total of 150 students competed in the individual rounds of the competition. Carl Branch (Lincoln) placed 1st, Eric Branch (Lincoln) placed 4th, Kyle Pietrowski (Washington) placed 9th, Nicole Bartels (Voyager) placed 13th, Emma Pederson (Washington) placed 14th, Mitchell Maday (Lincoln) placed 15th, Ryan Marciniak (Voyager) placed 16th and Madalyn Winger (Lincoln) placed 20th.

In the Fact Drill competition, Tyler Kay (Lincoln) placed 16th, Grant Toivonen (Voyager) placed 18th, Dylan Schneider (Carlos) placed 19th and Leif Johnson (Lincoln) placed 20th.

All participating students received certificates for their efforts, and top scorers also received medallions, ribbons or plaques.

The 5th grade Math Masters competition will be held on April 24 in Osakis.
