Another big month for building projects in Alexandria; $75M is in sight for 2020

Alexandria has experienced a surge of activity in all kinds of building projects, from new homes and additions to apartment complexes and government buildings.

One bright spot during the dark days of COVID-19: Building.

Alexandria has experienced a surge of activity in all kinds of building projects, from new homes and additions to apartment complexes and government buildings.

At Monday night’s Alexandria City Council meeting, City Administrator Marty Schultz said the city’s building department is on track to finish the year by issuing more than 1,000 permits for projects valued at $75 million, easily shattering last year’s mark of $55.2 million.

Schultz added it’s promising to see that even during a pandemic, people are still building houses and expanding their businesses.

A look at the city’s monthly building report for November shows just how busy contractors have been. Permits were issued for projects valued at $8.53 million. Here are 11 projects in November that topped the $100,000 mark:

  • $4 million to remodel a church building at 822 Douglas Street into county offices and meeting spaces.

  • Just over $1 million for a new T-hangar at the Alexandria Airport.

  • $800,000 for the footing and foundation work for a new 80-unit apartment building at 1873 10th Ave. E. (across the street from Woodland Elementary School).

  • Two new townhouses, each valued at $500,000, along County Road 22 NW.

  • Two new single-family homes, each valued at $415,000, on Geneva Golf Club Drive NE.

  • $202,000 for a 42-by-60-foot Morton building accessory on South L’Homme Dieu Drive.

  • $200,000 for an addition, repair and remodel of a house on Casa Marina Lane.

  • $120,000 for an interior remodel at a home on East Lake Geneva Road.

  • $107,519 for addition, repair, remodel and deck for a home on Carlos Darling Court.
