ALEXANDRIA — AmeriCorps announced Alexandria Public Schools Community Education will be among the sites providing 450 summer service opportunities being offered to assist with educational, housing and climate related needs throughout Minnesota.
The new program, Summer Impact Corps, has begun recruiting for service positions starting in May and June. Organizations seeking assistance in the areas of education, housing and climate are also encouraged to apply at ampact.us/summer .
“People often associate summer months with idyllic days of vacation and relaxation. This is not the case for a large portion of Minnesotans, who are struggling with housing, paying energy-related bills and, for many students, learning issues,” Chue Xiong, program director of Summer Impact Corps, said in a press release. “So, AmeriCorps has created this pilot program to bring people interested in summer service together with people in need.”
The 450 positions will be placed throughout Minnesota, with more than half in the metro area. AmeriCorps is offering a stipend of $6,600 for three months of service, plus an additional $1,374 for student loans or tuition, and free individual health insurance and childcare assistance for those that qualify.
These AmeriCorps members will serve full-time helping people to access resources, develop action plans and build necessary skills. To serve, you must be at least 17 years old (some positions require 18+), be a high school graduate (or equivalent), and be willing to commit to the full summer of service. No experience is required, as training is provided.
