Twenty students at Alexandria Technical & Community College took first place at the SkillsUSA state championships this month in the Twin Cities and various other locations.
The event showcased more than 600 career and technical education students from Minnesota who competed in 60 hands-on state contests in trade, technical and leadership fields, said Sherri Randt, admissions representative and SkillsUSA adviser at the college.
She explained that students work against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in numerous occupations. All contests are run with the help of over 400 industries, trade associations and labor organizations. In addition, Randt said that leadership contestants demonstrated their skills, which included extemporaneous speaking, prepared speech and job interviewing.
Fifteen ATCC students qualified in 14 events for the 55th Annual National SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference June 24-29 in Louisville. That includes five Postsecondary Enrollment Options students in four events, competing in high school divisions.
Nicholas Josul and Robert Dufeck each qualified in two categories.
Three first-place winners did not qualify since the event the won is not represented at nationals, Randt said.
ATCC is also sending two state officers to the national conference, and one will be competing in a team competition.
In addition, 15 students from the college took second place, and another 19 placed third. The ATCC students are enrolled in machine tool technology, carpentry, diesel mechanics, powersports, mechatronics, welding, and mechanical drafting, design and engineering programs.
