Progress continues on building a Veterans Memorial Park in Alexandria.

The Alexandria Park Board is going to review conceptual drawings for the restroom/gazebo area of the park at its Feb. 12 meeting, City Administrator Marty Schultz told the council in a memo for its Feb. 11 meeting.

The goal is to bring an agreement for the council to consider at its next meeting.

"We are now looking at a 'phase 1' agreement that would be for the memorial only," Schultz said. "A 'phase 2' agreement for the restroom/gazebo will likely follow shortly after that."

The park will include stone memorials containing the names of veterans past and present in what used to be known as Legion Park at the corner of Broadway Street and Eighth Avenue, east of Viking Towers.

Following are other items from the Feb. 11 meeting not covered in other council stories.

City workers take leadership roles

The council voted to support the appointment of the city's finance clerk, Kathy Summer, to serve another term as the Region 3 vice president in the Minnesota Clerks and Finance Officers Association.

City Administrator Marty Schultz and Finance Director Jane Blade also supported Summer's pursuit of the position.

The operations manager of the Runestone Community Center, Matt Hennen, is also taking a state leadership role, serving as vice president of the Minnesota Ice Arena Managers Association Board.

The council approved Hennen's request to attend a state workshop.

Licenses approved

The council approved two licenses - a license to Alexandria Cub Foods to sell fireworks inside and a gambling permit to the Alexandria Youth Baseball Association to conduct bingo and to sell raffle tickets for a drawing at the Broadway Ballroom April 5.
