ROSEAU, Minn. -- Minnesota Lottery officials said Thursday someone bought the winning $22.8 million ticket drawn Wednesday at a Holiday Station store in Roseau.
General Manager Angie Brodshaug of Store No. 193 said the winner hadn’t claimed the ticket yet Thursday, but the phones have been ringing off the hook since the news first came out.
“There’s been so many people stopping in and asking us ‘Is it true? Is it true?’ ” she said. “We’ve been getting phone calls, text messages, emails. It’s so exciting.”
Brodshaug said Minnesota Lottery officials told her it was the first jackpot prize in the multistate Lotto America game that began just four months ago.
If the winner picks the cash option, the prize is worth an estimated $13.5 million, or $9.4 million after the required taxes are withheld.
Still, not too shabby. Brodshaug said she would have no trouble spending the money if she were the winner.
“I would take my family on a nice trip to Paris,” she said. “I would buy my parents and mother- and father-in-law a new place and maybe buy another arena for my hometown. We’re quite known for our hockey up in this area.”
Roseau, a town of about 2,700, is about 10 miles south of the Canadian border.
Brodshaug has managed the store at 503 Third St. N.W. for five years, but she said she’s never seen such a large prize come out of her store.
“Not even close,” she said. “We’ve had maybe a $1,000, $5,000 winner, but nothing that big.”
As the store that sold the winning ticket, Holiday will get a $10,000 bonus after the prize is claimed.
Lotto America replaced the Hot Lotto game last fall, and the twice-weekly drawing works the same way with the jackpot growing each time there is not a winner. The jackpot goes back to $2 million for Saturday’s drawing.
The winning ticket matched all the numbers: 8-21-38-50-51 and Star Ball, 4.
Along with Minnesota, Lotto America is played in Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia.
