Kulp runs for District 8B House seat

Gail Kulp

Gail Kulp of Alexandria told a roomful of supporters on Jan. 18 that she will run for office again in 2018.

As she did two years ago, Kulp is vying for the District 8B seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives currently held by Mary Franson, R-Alexandria.

Kulp plans to visit with voters at the Douglas County DFL Caucus on Feb. 6 at Discovery Middle School. She said she looks forward to town hall meetings and knocking on doors in Douglas and Otter Tail counties.

Kulp said she believes it's true that "people don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." She has been a caregiver and advocate since 1978 when her son was born with severe, life-limiting disabilities, including seizures.

"Jason never took a step, never spoke a word, and was never able to meet any of his own needs, but he understood the love he received from family and care providers in our home," Kulp said.

After his death in 2013, Kulp focused on being an advocate for her mother, a resident at Bethany in Alexandria until her death last August.

In addition to being a stay-at-home mom while her children were young, Kulp eventually began volunteering and then worked with parents of children who had special needs. She said her involvement with professionals at local, regional and state levels made it clear that wise investments with government funds can improve the quality of life for all children and their parents, including those with disabilities.

Kulp said she has deep roots in southern Douglas County — four generations from Osakis to Kensington. With encouragement from Jay, her husband of 41 years, along with technical and media support from her daughter, Kristina, running for office has become a family affair for the Kulps. They also enjoy fishing, boating, camping, sporting events, music and theater.

Kulp currently serves on the Alexandria Stormwater Committee, City of Alexandria Cable TV Commission, Inclusion Network, The Windmill Project Board of Directors, United Way Community Conversation on Housing and with her faith family at Shalom Lutheran.

House District 8B includes the cities of Alexandria, Carlos, Miltona, Nelson and Osakis; seven townships in eastern Douglas County; the cities of Bluffton, Clitherall, Deer Creek, Henning, New York Mills, Ottertail, Parkers Prairie, Richville, Urbank and Vining; and 26 townships in Otter Tail County.
