Be prepared: Marching bands are coming

A Viking-sized weekend is just around the corner with the Minnesota high school marching band championships coming to town, and resident and visitors should be prepared to make way for the marchers.

Drum corps Minnesota Brass, River City Rhythm, the Govenaires and Chops, along with several high school marching bands, will showcase their talent at the Alexandria Area High School football stadium Saturday, June 24, at 6:30 p.m.

The Vikingland Band Festival is Sunday, June 25, with the first downbeat at 1:30 p.m.

Marching bands will follow a parade route down Broadway starting at Fourth Avenue and ending at 15th Avenue.

Each band is guaranteed to perform in areas by Sixth, Eighth, 11th and 14th avenues along Broadway. Festival organizers encourage spectators to sit near these performance areas for the best view.

The Alexandria Police Department reminds everyone that there will be no parking on Broadway from 4th to 15th Avenue beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Any vehicles along the parade route at this time will be towed.

The will be no parking along 4th Avenue West and surrounding streets for the parade lineup area.

"No Parking" signs will be placed in these areas by Saturday night, and vehicles must be cleared by Sunday morning as bands line up.

Bleacher seating will be set up along Broadway at Sixth and Eighth avenue intersections early Sunday morning.

Tickets for bleacher seating at several performance viewing areas are available for purchase online at, and can be picked up at the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce.

Any remaining tickets not purchased prior to the the parade will be sold at the bleacher seating.
