First half tax payments are due soon

Property owners are being reminded that their first half real estate tax payments are due soon.

Douglas County Auditor/Treasurer Char Rosenow sent out the reminder, stating that payments are due on or before Monday, May 15.

Payments can be made in person until 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 15. If mailing tax payments, Rosenow said to be sure envelopes are postmarked no later than the May 15 deadline to avoid penalty.

"Douglas County has installed a tax payment drop box outside the building on the south side of the courthouse," she said. "Tax payments may be dropped off there."

In addition, Rosenow said the county offers a direct payment plan. With the program, tax payments will be automatically taken out of an account of the taxpayer's choice on the tax due date.

"You will get a notification letter around two weeks prior to the tax due date," Rosenow said.

If property owners have questions or if they would like to receive an automatic payment form, they can go to the Douglas County website, www.co.douglas.mn.us and print out a copy of the Direct Payment Plan that can be found under "I want/forms," and then return it to the auditor/treasurer's office at 305 Eighth Ave. West, Alexandria.
