John Seiler had “the race of his life” last weekend. At the Harvest Duathlon in Alexandria, Seiler, 51, took second place in his age group.
“I’d never seen John so happy,” said Daryl Stevens, a friend and fellow member of the St. Cloud River Runners. “He raced really well, and that made the day for him. He said, ‘Next year, I’m going to come back and finish first.’ ”
Just four days later, the St. Cloud-area biking and running community is mourning the loss of one of its most active, committed members.
The Sartell resident was killed Tuesday evening after being hit by a car while riding his bike, according to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. Seiler, a Sartell native, was biking north on the shoulder of County Road 2 just south of County Road 4 around 6:20 p.m. when he was hit from behind by a Ford Edge, according to authorities.
Witnesses told investigators the vehicle, driven by 73-year-old Judy Post of Pasadena, California, drifted onto the shoulder and struck Seiler from the rear, throwing him from his bike into the ditch.
Rescuers attempted to revive Seiler with CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
