Pedestrian struck by hit-and-run motorcyclists dies
MINNEAPOLIS -- A man died Saturday afternoon from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident in Minneapolis Friday night.
The incident took place just after 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 27th Street East and Cedar Avenue, according to Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder.
A motorcycle was heading southbound on Cedar Avenue when the driver struck the man, who officers believe was attempting to cross the street.
“The (driver) then just continued southbound without stopping,” Elders said.
The man was alert when officers responded to the scene and was able to provide some information about what had happened. His condition deteriorated quickly and he died at the hospital.
His name has not been released.
“When you have someone on foot hit by a motorcycle, I don’t think you can use the excuse ‘well gee I didn’t know I hit someone,’ ” Elder said. “It’s very, very sad.”
The driver is described as a white male in his 30s with light-colored hair. He was riding a black motorcycle with high handlebars.

Officers stand in for slain comrade at graduation
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. -- It didn’t seem right to Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell that the twin daughters of a police officer killed in the line of duty were going to graduate from high school Friday night without anyone to stand in their father’s stead.
The officer, Joe Bergeron, was shot and killed while investigating a carjacking in 2010.
“It had come up that the five-year anniversary of his death was getting near, and at the same time we realized his two girls were graduating,” Schnell said. “That’s a big change for their family, and there was some discussion around the department: ‘We should go there and stand in Joe’s place.’”
In all, 17 of the department’s 51 total officers were on hand to see Alexandra and Samantha Bergeron accept their diplomas from White Bear Lake Area High School.
“It was a nice showing, and I think that the girls were certainly surprised,” Schnell said. “We wanted to be there for them, and we were glad we were.”
