David Kjos shot a hole-in-one last week during the 2008 Lakes to the Links Member/Guest tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club.

Kjos aced the 115-yard No. 7 hole using a gap wedge.

9th grade football practice

Alexandria 9th grade football practice begins Monday, August 11.

Details regarding practices as well as player information forms can be picked up in the Discovery Middle School office.

Peters, Boe, Falk in Junior PGA championship

Pierce Peters of Glenwood finished 27th in the Minnesota Section Junior PGA Championship at Breezy Point Golf Club last week.

Peters finished with rounds of 78-80 for a total 158.

Robert Bell of Pierz captured title honors in a playoff with rounds of 68-70 for a total 138.

In the girls' Junior PGA Championship, Glenwood's Courtney Boe tied for fourth as she shot rounds of 75-75 for a two day total of 150.

Samantha Falk of Glenwood was 26th with rounds of 93-103 for a 196.

Amy Anderson of Oxbow, North Dakota was the champion with a final 75-66-141.

Waterama 5K, 10K runs

The 33rd annual Glenwood Rotary Waterama 5K and 10K runs and Magic Mile will be held Saturday, July 26 across from the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood.

Registration opens at 7 a.m. with pre-race instruction at 7:45 a.m.

Buses will transport runners to their starting points with the races beginning at 8 a.m.

Entry fee, which includes a T-shirt, is $15 for the 5K and 10K, and $10 for the Magic Mile.

There will be awards for the top finishers in each age group for men and women.

Chief Wenonga 7-on-7 football tournament

In conjuction with Chief Wenonga Days in Battle Lake, there will be a 7-on-7 football tournament at the Dick Buntje Football Complex Saturday, July 26 at 9 a.m.

The cost is $125 per team and players must have graduated from high school to be eligible to play. Each team may have up to 12 players on its roster.

It will be an eight-team double-elimination bracket with every team guaranteed two games.

Swim practice begins August 11

Swimming practice for Alexandria Cardinal girls' varsity will be Monday through Saturday, beginning August 11, from 8-10:30 a.m.

Varsity and junior high diving practice will also be held at the same time.

Junior high swimming practice for grades 7 and 8 will start Monday, August 25 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The varsity parent/athlete swim team meeting will be held after the mass meeting at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 7 at Jefferson High School.

Before swimmers can practice, they must pick up, fill out and return the completed forms to the appropriate school, along with a paid participation fee.

Athletic screenings and physicals must be updated every third year.

Appointments for athletic physicals can be made through the activities offices.

All-sports meet at JHS

All all-sports mass meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 7 in the Jefferson High School gymnasium for all varsity participants and their parents to review the policies for all athletic teams.

Hole-in-one

Bill Estes of Alexandria recorded a hole-in-one on Wednesday, July 9 at the Atikwa Golf Club.

Estes, golfing with Dick Enstad, Wade Meyer and Tom Schoenrock, aced the 169-yard, par-3 No. 3 using a 5-iron.

On Sunday, July 6, John Page of Alexandria aced Atikwa's 258-yard, par-4 No. 17 using a driver.

Lutheran Night at Beetles

Thrivent Financial will be sponsoring Lutheran Night at the Alexandria Beetles on Monday, July 28 at 6:05 p.m.

General admission tickets are available at both local Thrivent offices for $2 and include a concession voucher for a hot dog and drink.

Tickets are available to all Lutherans in Douglas County, not exclusive to Thrivent members and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Children 4 and younger are free.

Motorcycle fun ride

The Parkers Prairie Pride of Lions Club is sponsoring their annual "Motorcycle Fun Ride for Youth" tomorrow, Saturday, in Parkers Prairie.

The ride will be 120+ miles with stops in Ottertail, Clitherall, Leaf Valley and Rose City.

The ride will begin and finish at the Parkers Prairie Municipal Liquor Store/City Park.

Food and refreshments will be available following the ride.

Registration is from 10-11:45 a.m. with the ride beginning around noon, rain or shine.

Cost is $15 per rider and $5 pillion.

GOLF

CBCA golf classic

The Country Bible Christian Academy of rural Ashby will sponsor the 7th annual Golf Classic to raise support for the Academy on Saturday, August 23.

The event begins at 1 p.m. and will be held at the Pebble Lake Golf Course in Fergus Falls.

U of M golf tournament

Members of the University of Minnesota Gopher football team's coaching staff will be in Alexandria Monday, July 28 for a benefit golf tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club.

The tournament is sponsored by the Gopher Goal Line Club.

Entry fee is $125, which includes golf, free wind shirt, dinner and chances to win many prizes.

Head coach Tim Brewster will be the featured speaker following the dinner.

WRESTLING

Monday night wrestling

The Alexandria wrestling program is hosting open wrestling nights on July 14, 21 and 28 in the Discovery School wrestling room.

All sessions run from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Wrestling is open to students of all ages interested in giving wrestling a try.

There is no cost to participate and sessions will be geared to teaching beginning wrestling skills that will also help the experienced wrestler by reviewing skills not used since the end of last season.

SOFTBALL

Men's slow pitch tourney

Productive Alternatives is sponsoring its second annual 10-team men's slow pitch softball tournament Saturday, August 9 at the Parkers Prairie city park.

All proceeds from the tournament will be used to fund development efforts for Productive Alternatives in Alexandria, Brainerd, Fergus Falls, Little Falls, Moorhead, Parkers Prairie and Perham.

Heat on the Street

A three-on-three basketball tournament for students in junior and senior high school has been set for Thursday, July 24 at Legion Park, 8th and Broadway in Alexandria from 4 to 9:30 p.m.

The Heat on the Street event, sponsored by the Alexandria Missions Fellowship, will include prizes for division champions.

The event kicks off with a live band at 4 p.m., with a special message provided by Jeff Morris and Greg Kneprath.
