The Cardinal girls' hockey team completed their regular season with only one loss and on a 22-game unbeaten streak by taking down Elk River 5-2 on Tuesday night.

The Elks came into the game with a 16-6-2 record, looking to knock off the Cardinals before heading into the section tournaments. Alex let them know early, though, that that was not about to happen as they took a three-goal lead after the first period.

Michelle Anez and Abby Williams were in sync from the drop of the puck as the two connected on two goals in the opening eight minutes with Anez scoring and Williams picking up the assists. Williams picked up her third point in the opening period on another assist, this time on an Ashley Holmes goal.

Elk River cut into that lead in the second with a goal five minutes in. That would be all the closer they would get, though, as Kathryn DelZoppo scored a goal on Williams' fourth assist of the night, and Anez capped off the regular season with a hat trick to give her team a 5-1 lead in the third period.

Danielle Justice allowed just her 23rd goal of the season on her way to 29 saves. She ends the regular season with a 0.91 goals against average.

It was an impressive regular season for the Cardinals in all facets of the game as they end with a 22-1-2 record. If momentum means anything in the playoffs, they have it.

For six seniors, including the big four of Williams, Justice, DelZoppo and Holmes, the start of the playoffs means the final chance to finally capture an elusive state title.
