More corn, despite fewer corn acres in Douglas County

Drought eased, resulting in better crop yields of corn and soybeans statewide.

ALEXANDRIA — Douglas County farmers got better soybean yields in 2022 than in 2021, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The soybean yield, which means the number of bushels harvested per acre, rose from 37.2 bushels per acre in 2021 to 42.6 bushels per acre in 2022. Yields were below the statewide average of 47 bushels per acre in 2021 and 50 acres in 2022.

Douglas County's average corn yield was up, too, from 138.9 bushels per acre in 2021 to 181.1 in 2022. Statewide, the average yield rose from 177 bushels per acre in 2021 to 195 bushels in 2022.

The increased yield for corn meant that even though Douglas County farmers planted about 8,000 fewer acres of corn in 2022 than in 2021, they still raised 2.1 million more bushels of corn in 2022.

The improved yields were not surprising, as the drought gripping the county in 2021 eased in 2022.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
