Swing band concert to raise money for Alexandria Senior Center music programs

Funds will pay for music and monthly dances on Sundays.

Katy's Swing Band will perform holiday music on Sunday, Nov. 28 in hopes of raising money to support the Alexandria Senior Center's Sunday music events.

While the Sunday concerts and monthly dances have been sporadic during the pandemic, organizer Chuck Wencl said that they provide a bright spot to a day that can be lonely for the area's elders.

"We pass the hat at these events," he said, but sometimes those who come don't have money to contribute to the senior center's expenses.

The concert will take place at 2 p.m. at the Andria Theatre and last about 90 minutes. Cost to get in is $10 for adults and $5 for students; tickets are available at the senior center and at the door. The concert will include contemporary tunes from Michael Buble and Diana Krall, as well as Lou Rawls' version of "Merry Christmas, Baby," with several performers providing vocals.

It's the second such fundraising concert, with the first one taking place in December 2019. This year's concert is earlier, he said, so as not to conflict with Christmas travel plans. He said organizers hope to turn it into an annual event.

The concert will be recorded and broadcast on KOOL-TV, Wencl said.
