Girls roundup: Grace Otto's 16 helps Brandon-Evansville sweep at Lakeview Tournament
Alexandria bounces back from close loss to Class 4A Cambridge-Isanti (7-2) by rolling over Big Lake to improve to 4-4 heading into the new year. West Central Area also swept two games at the Pelican Rapids Tournament.
The Brandon-Evansville girls basketball team finished off a 2-0 run at the Lakeview Holiday Tournament in Cottonwood by beating the host school 58-33 on Thursday.
The two wins got the Chargers back to .500 at 4-4 heading into the new year. Lakeview (0-11) was within 10 points at the half, but the Chargers’ defense held strong through 36 minutes. Grace Otto had 16 points for B-E to help lead the offense, while Kylee Dingwall and Olivia Otto added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
“We did a very nice job defensively,” B-E head coach Zach Traphagen said. “Rotations were on point and the energy and intensity was where it needs to be every game. Offensively, we did a great job of staying patient and getting ball reversals so we could get better shots. Grace Otto played an outstanding game on both ends of the floor and hopefully that will spark more confidence into her development. It was a fun tournament that Lakeview put on, and we played some pretty good basketball to earn a couple wins.”

Cardinals go 1-1 at Granite City Classic
A young Alexandria team continued to show its potential during two games at the Granite City Classic in the St. Cloud Area on Dec. 29 and 30.
The Cardinals played a good Class 4A program in Cambridge-Isanti (7-2) on Wednesday and fell in a close 57-52 final. Alexandria then bounced right back on Thursday with a 55-35 win over Big Lake (0-9) to up its record to 4-4.
Hadley Thul led all scorers in the game against Big Lake with 19 points. That was after she put up 23 points against a big Cambridge-Isanti team that includes twin sisters Maraya and Evelyn Wiltrout at power forward who both have good length at over 6-feet tall.
“We battled and had the game in control, handling the physical play and intensity,” Alexandria head coach Wendy Kohler said. “A few miscues in execution down the stretch forced us to foul. We played a tough, strong game against a formidable opponent. Games like this on a big stage will be huge in March. We bounced back the next night with a solid victory over Big Lake.”
The Cardinals will go on the road next against former Section 8-3A rival Bemidji on Jan. 4 at 7:15 p.m. The Lumberjacks are playing out of Section 8-4A this season and had a 3-4 record after a 45-38 loss to Brainerd on Dec. 23.
