Former Douglas County sheriff dies at 70

Terry Eilers, who later served as Park Rapids police chief from 2003-2016, died of pancreatic and liver cancer on Nov. 27.

Former Douglas County Sheriff Terry Eilers, 70, passed away on Nov. 27 in Alexandria.

According to his obituary, he was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer in July 2020.

Eilers had 46 years of law enforcement experience, his last 13 as the Park Rapids police chief. Eilers began his career in Douglas County in 1970. He was elected as Douglas County Sheriff in 1983.

In 1996, the Eilers purchased K & K Sports and then later moved to Park Rapids. Terry was later hired as chief of police for the city of Park Rapids from 2003-2016.

For the past five winters, the Eilers resided in Arizona, returning each spring to their home on wheels at Toad Lake in northern Minn.
