ALEXANDRIA — Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County is seeking bids on three three-bedroom homes and one four-bedroom home, with construction to begin in April.
The project calls for a new public road, and extensions of sewer, water, natural gas and fiber-optic infrastructure, all at the developer's expense. The total cost of the improvements is estimated at between $4 to $5 million.
Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Douglas County Public Works and City of Alexandria were on-hand to answer questions from the more than 60 people who attended the meeting in person and several more who attended via Zoom.
In just the July 2022 building report alone, there were at least five commercial projects that were each valued at more than $500,000 and two new homes valued at more than $500,000 each.
Minnesota health department and pollution control officials estimate the state will need to spend $12.5 billion over the next 20 years to keep up with waste and drinking water needs.
The supply can't keep up with the demand. Executive Director of Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission Nicole Fernholz says the city is working aggressively to ensure enough affordable housing.
