ALEXANDRIA — The public is invited to the first-ever Youth and Family Ice Skating Day hosted by Discovery Middle School. Organizers hope to make it an annual event.

The skate day will take place at the new Discovery Middle School skating rink on Sunday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Bring your own skates if you have them. If not, there will be free ice skate rentals – 50 pair sized 2 to 10 – provided by Cowing Robards. There will also be volunteers stationed around the rink to help first-time skaters.

Food truck lunches will be available for purchase on-site and there will also be music.

"There may even be a few fire rings to keep warm," said Lukas Gotto, DMS teacher and an organizer of the event. "We hope it can be a great family fun day mid-winter to break up the regular routine and kick off Every Kid Healthy Week in our schools."

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
