With veterans, residents and volunteers proudly watching, crews from ALP Utilities and Runestone Electric Association put up a 30-by-40-foot flag over the basketball courts next to Alexandria's new Veterans Park Memorial Saturday morning, July 4.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic canceled plans to celebrate the park's opening with a Fourth of July parade and dedication, the flag added a patriotic tribute to the park, located along the corner of Eighth and Broadway.

After the flag was in place, the National Anthem was played over the park's speaker system.

The flag will wave until 8 p.m. tonight, July 4, and passing motorists are invited to honk their horns as they drive by in appreciation of veterans.

The public is also welcome to check out the park, following social distancing guidelines and other precautions.
