Although the COVID-19 pandemic canceled plans to celebrate the opening of the new Veterans Memorial Park in Alexandria with a Fourth of July parade and dedication, there will still be something special happening near the park.

Crews from the Runestone Electric Association and ALP Utilities will put up a huge 30-by-40-foot flag on the basketball courts next to the park, located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Broadway.

The flag will be unfurled at 7 a.m. this Saturday, July 4, and will wave until 8 p.m. Passing motorists are invited to honk their horns as they drive by in appreciation of veterans.

The public is also welcome to visit the park, following social distancing guidelines and other precautions.
