The Junkyard Crawl, a classic car tour and parade to raise donations for area food shelves, will take place this Saturday, June 20, starting at 1 p.m.

Anyone with a specialty vehicle is invited to join the 100-mile route, which will travel through 12 towns in four hours. It will start from Rohner’s Auto Parts on County Road 27 north of Willmar and will go to three other junkyards that ship antique auto parts daily. There will be food stops in Annandale at 3 p.m. and New London at 5 p.m.

Drivers can join the tour at any of the stops. Car clubs from Alexandria, Osakis and Glenwood are planning to cruise together to the starting point. Highlights of the tour include seeing one of the few remaining drive-in movie theaters, going to a car sale featuring 100 vehicles, watching a car getting crushed, visiting an indoor ATV and motorcycle dealership, and seeing an antique snowmobile collection.

The idea for the tour, organizers said, came after drivers in Alexandria and Glenwood asked for more runs. Organizers said hundreds of vehicles are expected to participate from Minnesota, North Dakota and Iowa, and the event will be filmed by Public TV.

Six weeks ago, a similar tour that started in Alexandria drew 79 vehicles. Three weeks ago, a route from the Glenwood area drew 110 vehicles.

Three more car runs are also planned – Sunday, July 19 during New London Water Days with a route from New London to Eagle Bend to Alexandria; and the “Tip Big or Stay Home Weekend” on Saturday, September 5 from Glenwood to Sunburg and back to Glenwood, and on Sunday, September 6 from Glenwood to Parkers Prairie for an arts and antiques vendors weekend.
