A Sons of Norway chapter is inviting neighboring communities to its annual David Simpkins Memorial Vinterfest, which this year will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 1-5 p.m. in Henning, and focus on ice skating.

Figure skater Ashley Miller, also a teacher, coach and college student, will demonstrate ice skating and help new skaters. Those without skates can choose from 50 pairs of skates of varying sizes to use for free during the event.

The free event also includes sledding, tobogganing and kicksledding, and a bonfire for kids to roast marshmallows for s'mores. Soccer, reading, games and other indoor activities, plus potluck snacks, will be in the Henning Community Center on Second Street.

Vinterfest was started by Simpkins, a newspaper publisher, and his wife, Linda Simpkins, focusing on winter sports, mainly skiing plus snowshoeing and kicksledding. Following his death, the Leif Erikson Sons of Norway chapter in Vining, in Otter Tail County, began organizing it.
