Preparations are well underway for Night to Shine, a prom event for people with special needs age 14 and older, which is set for early February.

Those preparations include two days where those who plan on attending Night to Shine can choose clothing and accessories to wear to the event. Prom dresses, suits, dress shirts, ties, shoes and jewelry can all be selected at no charge during the shopping days, which are from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18, at New Life Christian Church.

The church at 1910 County Road 82 SE, Alexandria, is also the site of Night to Shine at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7. To register, visit and click on "Night to Shine." Space is limited, so register early to guarantee a reservation. Registration closes on Jan. 19, and there is no charge to guests, caregivers and escorting family members. For more information, contact Shawn or Judyann Fridgen at 320-815-7566.

Organizers say the event relies on the generosity of the community for fresh flowers, crowns and tiaras, special hairdo touches, shoe shines, foods, games, a DJ and dance floor. It also relies on volunteers ages 16 and up to buddy with guests. A training session for volunteers is set for Thursday, Jan. 30, at 6:30 at New Life. To volunteer, call Paul and Heather Fernholz at 701-238-5498.
