In remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that killed 2,996 people, the lawn of the 3M plant in Alexandria will be covered with United States flags Wednesday– one for every person who died in the attacks.

The Douglas County Honor Guard conducted ceremonies amidst the flags on Wednesday morning at 8:55 and 9:25. After marching to the center of the flags, the members stood silently for several minutes in honor of the victims. A large flag was also hung over the field by the ladder truck from the Alexandria Fire Department.

Wednesday marks the 18th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center towers and Pentagon.

The flags were put up on the 3M property adjacent to Highway 29 on Tuesday night, and will be removed Wednesday night.
