From chainsaw carving and sampling whiskey to throwing bean bags and browsing hand-crafted items, Moonshine Madness Day in Osakis offers something for everyone.
The sixth annual celebration will hit the streets of Osakis on Saturday, Sept. 7 in two main locations – downtown and Panther Distillery.
Several new twists have been added this year:
A Moonshine Half-Mile Fun Run will start around 11 a.m. from Knight’s Pub and Grub to the Osakis Liquor Store. Participants can register the day of the run or go to the Moonshine Madness Facebook page.
The new owners of the bowling alley, Bryan and Tonya Danielson, wanted to get in on the fun so they’re offering street bowling, starting at noon, in front of their new business, which is under construction, The Bowling Barn and Grill.
Panther Distillery will hold a bartender competition at 2 p.m.
And you could win a prize in “Dung for Dollars” if you’re lucky enough to guess where an animal will do its duty in the empty lot just past the bowling alley.
A couple of events will start on Friday – chainsaw carving will go on all day in Central Park and a Poker Walk will start Friday night at 5 p.m. Both events will also take place Saturday.
Organizers are hoping for a good crowd and lots of fun.
“Every year it gets better and better,” said Laura Backes, a member of the planning committee.
“We learn every year things to not do again and what to bring back. Everyone loves the trolley rides to get around town and last year we offered horse-drawn rides to the liquor store and VFW and that will be back.”
Backes is also excited about the food and craft vendors that will set up downtown.
“We have a lot of vendors lined up — between 25 and 30,” she said. “The streets will look packed and several businesses have new store fronts. Many will have products outside so there will be lots of shopping opportunities.”
Backes said a lot of planning goes into Moonshine Madness.
“We have a great committee with a few new people this year,” she said. “We’re grateful to have this fun day but it takes a lot of volunteers to make it happen. Everyone chips in and does their part. That’s the only way a big day like this can happen in a small town.”
In addition to support from businesses, several local resorts also helped sponsor the event, including Buck Point, Lakeshore, Holiday, Head of the Lakes, Sunfish, Linwood, Midway Beach and Two Mile Campground.
