In honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day, 48 law enforcement officers from five different local agencies took part in a standing of the guard ceremony at Curt Felt Park in Alexandria on Friday, May 15.

Because the statewide event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic and the governor's stay-at-home orders, law enforcement agencies opted to do it locally, said Ron Boyden with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Boyden said from noon to 6 p.m. officers were standing guard at the park, rotating every 15 minutes. Agencies involved included the Alexandria Police Department, Osakis Police Department, Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota State Patrol and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, which had representatives from its records department, dispatch center and jail.

Peace Officers Memorial Day, along with Police Week, pays tribute to the local, state and federal peace officers who have died, or who have been disabled, in the line of duty. Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed on May 15 every year.
