ALEXANDRIA — SunOpta of Alexandria held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new warehouse located along the north side of Interstate- 94 on Monday, Oct. 3.
The $25 million 252,000-square-foot warehouse is expected to help with the production of oat milk. A product that has grown in demand over the last few years.
"The new warehouse demonstrates SunOpta’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and innovation—and the Alexandria community," a press release stated. "In 2020, SunOpta made a $26 million investment to make oatmilk at its Third Avenue facility. Both of SunOpta’s Alexandria facilities–Third Avenue and Minnesota Street–will utilize the warehouse as the company continues on its path to double its plant-based business by 2025."
According to an Echo Press article published last Oct., in 2020, plant-based milk grew twice as fast as cow's milk and makes up 15% of the entire milk category.
“Capacity expansion and regional production are key tenets of SunOpta’s strategy for dynamic growth,” said Cody Emery, Minnesota Street Plant Manager, SunOpta. “This warehouse is yet another step to fuel the future of sustainable, plant-based and fruit-based food and beverages.”
