STAR Energy Services, LLC in Alexandria has purchased PowerPlus Engineering, LLC of La Crosse, Wisconsin.

PowerPlus provides electrical engineering services to rural electric cooperatives in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. This purchase adds three full-time employees to STAR's staff, increasing its employee count to 21.

STAR's headquarters will remain in Alexandria, but a branch office will remain in La Crosse.

"PowerPlus' areas of expertise fit well with the services STAR currently provides to electric cooperatives - electrical engineering, inspection services, GIS, safety coordination, IT support, electrical testing and software development," said Al Haman, CEO of STAR. "The clients of PowerPlus will now have access to these expanded services."

As part of the sale, STAR has issued 20 percent membership interest to MINNOWA, LLC of Rushford. MINNOWA is owned by four rural electric cooperatives: Tri-County Electric Cooperative of Rushford; Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative of Postville, Iowa; Hawkeye REC (Cresco, IA), and Heartland Power Cooperative of Thompson and St. Ansgar, Iowa.

The remaining 80 percent ownership is split evenly between four Minnesota electric cooperatives: Agralite Electric Cooperative of Benson, Meeker Cooperative Light and Power Association of Litchfield, Runestone Electric Association of Alexandria, and Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative of Wadena.

Additionally, STAR has spun off its custom software into a new company, Argo Software Holdings, LLC, which has entered into an exclusive software licensing agreement with STAR. This agreement allows STAR to continue to enhance, market and sell the applications.

"This action combines the resources of two very successful companies and makes them both better as one," said Rick Banke, CEO of Runestone Electric Association. "We are eight electric cooperatives located in Iowa and Minnesota working together in an innovative way to meet the needs of our members. STAR Energy Services is a great organization and this acquisition a tremendous accomplishment."
