Knute Nelson, a nonprofit senior living and services provider, will be expanding their continuum of care with the acquisition of Prairie Senior Cottages residential community in Alexandria.
Prairie Senior Cottages is an 18-unit memory care assisted living community in a cottage model that provides a comfortable and therapeutic environment for those with memory loss. Prairie Senior Cottages will continue to own and operate its other facilities located throughout Minnesota.
“Expanding our continuum to better serve those with memory loss in Alexandria, as well as providing our current residents with the care they need when they need it, is essential to our mission of enriching lives,” said Mark Anderson, president and CEO. “The philosophies and environment Prairie Senior Cottages has developed for providing this care aligns well with those of Knute Nelson and we believe they will be a wonderful addition to our family of services.”
Employees of Prairie Senior Cottages will join the team at Knute Nelson while continuing to serve in their existing roles. Prairie Senior Cottages will begin operating under the name Autumn Cottages by Knute Nelson. In a news release, Knute Nelson explained the name: “Autumn” represents a period of maturity, a season of life. It is meant to be reflective of a new season of life within the Knute Nelson umbrella. “Cottage” stands for a small and cozy dwelling that evokes the charm of a fairy tale or countryside living.
“Ensuring the residents of Prairie Senior Cottages continue to receive the high-quality care they deserve and are accustomed to was essential in helping us make this decision,” said Dustin Lee, president of Prairie Senior Cottages. “We are confident in Knute Nelson’s capabilities as a senior living provider and know our staff and residents will be in good hands. We are working closely with Knute Nelson to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible.”

Knute Nelson currently offers memory care within its Grand Arbor (Alexandria) and Crystal Brook Senior Living (Park Rapids) campuses. The need for memory care assisted living services continues to grow with the rise of the aging population, according to Anderson.
