An outdoor axe throwing competition was right on target to celebrate the grand opening of a new entertainment venue in Alexandria last weekend, May 23-24.

The business, United States Axe, or USAxe for short, opened inside the Nordic Center building at 124 7th Ave. W. The competition took place in the parking lot on North Broadway near Copper Trail Brewing.

The company took precautions to make sure the event was safe during the pandemic, according to owners Dustin and Niki Knight. They kept the crowd size down by requiring competitors to make an appointment to throw. The times of the competition were staggered. Targets were spaced out to allow for social distancing and people watched from a safe distance in their cars.

Also, hand sanitizers were available and axes were wiped down between uses.

Niki Knight said the event worked well and drew a good mix of throwers.

"Over 80% of our competitors had never thrown an axe before this tournament, and we couldn’t be more proud of how everyone performed," she said.

USAxe's next event will take place DJ's Tap House on June 6. For more information, go the website,
