• The Forada Lions Club donated $1,000 to The Village Family Service Center in Alexandria. The Village provides a variety of behavioral health services to individuals, children and families throughout Douglas and Pope counties. Its programs and services include counseling, in-home family therapy, financial counseling, employee assistance programs and business training.
• Joe Ferriero will serve as box office and audience services manager for Theatre L'Homme Dieu this summer. Ferriero has worked in school and community theater for many years. He also co-owns Teen Drama, a teen theater company, and is a published playwright with several shows produced internationally. He worked on Broadway with the show "Lysistrata Jones," which was nominated for several awards in 2012, including a Tony. He is also the principal at St. Mary's Elementary School in Morris.

• Dr. Lowell Gess of Alexandria received the prestigious Charles J. Turck Global Citizen Award from his alma mater, Macalester College during a school reunion this week. Gess, 97, is well known for decades of work treating eye problems in Sierra Leone. The award is named after Charles J. Turck, president of Macalester College from 1939-58, and recognizes a graduate "who has advanced the spirit of internationalism and lived up to the exhortation, 'to be a worthy son or daughter of Macalester, you must listen to your hopes and not your fears.'"
