DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Since early January, there have been two big storylines dominating local headlines and dinner table conversations in Detroit Lakes: One is the first ice harvest in nearly 50 years from Detroit Lake to be used for an ice palace on the city beach; the other, of course, is the fact that Detroit Lakes native Adam Thielen and his Minnesota Vikings are vying to be the first football team in NFL history to play a Super Bowl in their home stadium.
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. - It’s official: Detroit Lakes’ first ice harvest since the early 1970s is in the books. A crew of nine men from Wee Kut Ice in Spicer, Minn., arrived late Thursday morning to begin the process of harvesting approximately 1,500 blocks of ice, to be used in the construction of a 30-foot-tall ice palace on the city beach. The Polar Fest Ice Palace is set to make its debut at a Grand Lighting Ceremony on Thursday Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. (which is also the first day of Polar Fest 2018).
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — After almost two hours of testimony Tuesday, Sept. 12, some of it quite emotional, the Detroit Lakes City Council opted to take no action on a proposed ordinance to raise the tobacco sales age to 21 within city limits — though the vote was not unanimous. At the conclusion of the public hearing on the proposed ordinance, Alderman Ron Zeman introduced a motion, seconded by Alderman Barb Voss, to not give the ordinance a first reading.
WASHINGTON—He may not have come up with the recipe himself, but U.S. Congressman Collin Peterson now has the right to brag that his staff members are among the best cooks on Capitol Hill. On Wednesday, the Minnesota Congressional delegation came together for U.S. Sen. Al Franken's seventh annual hotdish competition — and for the first time, Peterson's staff was victorious. "I think we came in second one year," Peterson said Thursday. "But this is the first time we won."
