Hole-in-one at Pine Ridge Ron Salo carded a hole-in-one at the Pine Ridge Golf Course near Brandon while playing on August 20. Salo was golfing with Clarence Bettin when he aces the par-3 eighth hole, which was playing 155 yards. Salo used a three wood. Holes-in-one at Miltona Dennis Hultstrand of Parkers Prairie carded a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at the Lake Miltona Golf Club on August 7. Hultstrand was playing with Lance Manfield and Lynn Carlson when he aced the par three, which was playing 214 yards. Alexandria's Coyla Trotzig aced hole 17 at Miltona on July 25.
Lee Ostendorf, owner of Tiremaxx of Alexandria, was quick to say yes when asked if he would be a one-a-month repair shop for the Douglas County Car Care Program (DCCCP). As a one-a-month repair shop, he agreed to repair a vehicle for DCCCP and not charge for labor. The car that Tiremaxx repaired this month was a 1997 Lincoln Continental for Rose Coulliard. The mission of DCCCP is fostering independence by providing car care. The carcass of a silver carp - the kind that leaps from the water when disturbed - was found recently on a dam abutment just north of Winona, the furthest upstream a silver carp has been discovered in the Mississippi River, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "Finding this carp on the sill of the dam suggests that it was attempting to jump over it; it wasn't just leaping due to a disturbance," said Nick Frohnauer, DNR invasive fish coordinator.

The Cardinals bounced back from a 4-3 loss to Becker in the opening match to beat Melrose 5-2 and LPGE 6-1. Ellie Bergstrand anchored the top singles spot for Alexandria and got three wins on the day. Her toughest came against Melrose, where she persevered for a 7-5, 0-6 (10-7) win.

Motorists on Highway 78 between Battle Lake and Ottertail will encounter a detour beginning Monday, Aug. 26, while crews replace several culverts south of Ottertail and begin reconstruction work in downtown Battle Lake. Traffic will be diverted to Highway 108 and Highway 210. The detour is scheduled to last through early October, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). Only local residents and motorists accessing businesses located within the closure area may use Highway 78.
Consumer watchdog Consumer Reports magazine recently ranked the surgical capabilities of 2,463 hospitals across the nation, including 49 hospitals in Minnesota. Douglas County Hospital received the highest possible score on a 1-5 scale for surgical outcomes. To compile the results, Consumer Reports worked with MPA, a health care consulting firm, to analyze Medicare claim forms from 2009-2011, for patients undergoing 27 kinds of scheduled surgeries, which was combined into an overall surgery rating. Harmon Killebrew's legacy of work with hospice is alive and well more than two years after his passing away while using hospice services. A total of 31 buses from all across West Central Minnesota, including Perham, Parker's Prairie, Battle Lake, Ottertail City, Fergus Falls, Alexandria, Henning, Ashby and Wadena headed to Target Field for the Harmon Killebrew Day of Hospice at Target Field this past Saturday. Nearly 1,600 bus riders stopped in Alexandria (below) for a tail-gating party consisting of grilled burgers, chips and water, sponsored by Pete's County Market.
