Ellen Josephine Hulkonen, 82, Alexandria, died April 2, 2009. Ellen was born at home in Moe Township to Jacob and Josephine (Johnson) Haabala on February 12, 1927. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Moe Township. She has been a lifelong member of the church with the exception of 20 years spent in Moorhead. Ellen served as Sunday school superintendent for several years and also served as president of the Mary Martha Guild. Ellen attended school at District 5 in Moe Township. She also attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota in St.
Joyce Lehn, 74, died March 30, 2009 at Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria. Joyce was born August 17, 1934 in Brandon Township, the daughter of John and Julia (Kolberg) Strom. She graduated from Brandon High School. On February 17, 1958, Joyce was united in marriage to Vernon Lehn. The couple farmed in the Brandon area. She also loved to garden, make jelly, lefse, doughnuts, and fattimond at Christmas.
Elsie Luverne Stoa, 89, Alexandria, died April 1, 2009. Elsie was born December 26, 1919 in Starbuck to Norman and Ida (Hagestuen) Pederson. Following Elsie's schooling she began work in the Gamble's Store, where she met her future husband. On June 12, 1946 Elsie was united in marriage to Walter Stoa at East Zion Lutheran Church in Starbuck. They were blessed with one daughter, Rebecca. Elsie and Walter made their home in Starbuck, where they owned Stoa's Grocery Store for about eight years. In August 1955 the family moved to Lake Mary where they ran Little Mary Resort.
Edith "Edie" Marie Germundson, 89, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Friday, March 27, 2009, at Clearwater Suites of Alexandria, where she has made her home for the past five years. Edith was born March 3, 1920 to Martin and Julia Lee in Erdahl, the youngest of nine children. She was baptized on May 2, 1920 at Erdahl N.E.L. Congregation, where she was also confirmed. Edie attended District 13 country school and graduated from Elbow Lake High School. She married Osborne "Ozzie" Thomas Germundson at Elbow Lake on October 30, 1939.
Andrew Gilbert Larson, 91, Osakis, died March 30, 2009 at Community Memorial Home in Osakis. Andrew was born March 17, 1918 in West Union Township, Todd County, to Louis and Martha (Olson) Larson. He was baptized at Sauk Valley Lutheran Church and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, both in rural Osakis. He attended country school in District 17 and graduated from the 8th grade in 1930. To further his education he attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis for the winter term of 1946-1947.
Howard Duane Hagen, 78, died March 26, 2009 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Howard was born December 3, 1930 to Todd and Mary (Curtin) Hagen in Tacoma, Washington, where he grew up and began his schooling. He graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma in 1949. Duane continued his education at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Following his schooling, in 1951 he enlisted in the United States Navy Air Corps, serving in the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in 1955. On November 14, 1953, he married Shirley Hawkinson at Central Lutheran Church in Tacoma.
Edith Germundson, 89 Edith Germundson, 89, Alexandria, formerly of Elbow Lake, died March 27, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. A prayer service will be held Wednesday, April 1 at 2 p.m. at Clearwater Suites in Alexandria and visitation will continue until 3:30 p.m. at Clearwater Suites. Margaret Mattocks, 80 Margaret Joyce Mattocks, 80, died March 28, 2009 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. Margaret was born May 25, 1928 in Alexandria to Alfred and Karen (Larson) Dokkebakken. She attended country school in rural Forada through the 8th grade. Margaret then worked at a wide variety of different jobs, working at the creamery and the telephone company in Alexandria and numerous cafes in Carlos and Parkers Prairie. Margaret was united in marriage to Donald Mattocks in 1947 in Alexandria. To this union the couple was blessed with seven children.
Romaine Anderson, 80 Romaine "Bud" James Anderson, 80, died March 21, 2009 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. Romaine was born January 3, 1929 near Hoffman, the son of Herman and Elfei (Nelson) Anderson. He was baptized in Wennersborg Lutheran Church by Pastor Carl Zaar and confirmed in Salem Lutheran Church by Pastor Sheldahl. He attended elementary school in Douglas and Grant counties and also a year at an agriculture school in Morris. Romaine married Gladys Tuel Koep.
Dale Evans, 73 Dale Leroy Evans, 73, Balaton, died March 26, 2009 at his home. Dale was born to Emil and Alma (Swanson) Evans on October 25, 1935 in Island Lake Township, Lyon County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First English Lutheran Church in Marshall. Dale attended Lynd Public School and graduated in 1953. Following graduation, he attended the Institute of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus. He returned home to farm with his father in Island Lake Township.
