It was cold. It was windy. But it was the Minnesota fishing opener. That meant there are those who braved the elements on Saturday to officially put winter behind them...

The Parkers Prairie softball team scored two runs in the sixth inning to secure a 7-6 win over West Central Area on Thursday night. Darianne Saxton and Kendra Thoennes both walked to start the inning. They came around to score on a base hit by Nichole Albright. It was part of a four-hit day for Albright as the sophomore finished with three RBIs. Caroline Carlson added three hits and two RBIs.
The Alexandria boys tennis team ran into perennial power St. Cloud Tech and fell 7-0 on Thursday in straight sets at every spot. The Tigers are the six-time defending Central Lakes Conference champions. They showed off their strength by giving up just four games in the singles lineup. The closest match came at third doubles, where Alexandria's Grant Storm and Wade Smith fell 6-1, 7-5. The Cardinals got just three games in the other two doubles spots.
The Brandon-Evansville softball team fell into second place in the Pheasant Conference on Thursday night as Hillcrest Lutheran Academy won a 10-0 game. It was a battle of the two top teams in the league, and the Comets (7-1, 6-1 Pheasant) never trailed. They scored once in the first inning and added four-run frames in the third and sixth to end things by the 10-run rule.
The Osakis baseball team's chances of capturing a Prairie Conference title took a hit on Thursday night as Upsala-Swanville Area came away with a 6-2 win in Osakis. The Patriots (7-8, 5-5 Prairie) hit a solo home run in the first inning before putting up five runs in the third. An error and a walk started USA's rally with one out before back-to-back doubles and a two-run single later in the inning gave the Patriots a comfortable lead.
The West Central Area baseball team snapped a two-game skid and climbed over .500 again with a 5-3 win after scoring three runs in the top of the seventh against Wheaton-Herman-Norcross. The Knights (7-6) had been outscored 23-7 in losses to Osakis and Brandon-Evansville, but put together a clean game to get that out of their minds on Thursday.
The Brandon-Evansville baseball team couldn't get the bats going against Ortonville's Mike Shake in a 7-0 loss to a now 13-1 Trojans team on Thursday night. The Chargers got just four hits, two from Jeremiah Betterman and one each from Jake Nohre and Kevin Campbell. They couldn't turn any of those into runs as Ortonville scored four through the first two innings to take control. Two B-E errors in the second led to three runs for the Trojans. The Chargers then left runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
