By Blaze Fugina email@example.com A five-game winning streak for the Brandon-Evansville girls basketball team was snapped in a 57-50 loss to section opponent New York Mills on Friday. Both the Chargers and Eagles came into Friday’s contest with winning records against Section 6A opponents. The Chargers are 11-3 against section teams, while New York Mills is 5-1. Even though the winning streak was snapped, head coach Dick Simpson said playing these tough games will pay off in the long run. “It’s good to play a good team like that,” Simpson said.
The dual meet season ended with a 97-89 victory for the Alexandria boys swimming and diving team against Fergus Falls in a road meet last Thursday. The Cardinals had five individual first place finishes in the win. Nick Chromey won the individual medley with a time of 2:11.77, and Max Jacobson followed that with a first place tie in the 50 freestyle with a 23.34.
The Alexandria wrestling team wrapped up its dual season with a 48-24 road victory over Sauk Rapids-Rice on Friday. The Cardinals were led by three pins in the match. Dylan Kriese picked up a pin at the 3:02 mark of his match at 132 pounds, Tristan Johnson pinned his opponent in 3:10 at 160 and Quintin Kluver-Longfellow won by fall at 5:02 at 182. Gage Zieske won by tech fall, 18-2, at 126 pounds, and Adam Johnson won by major decision at 120.
Alexandria senior Katie Gieseke qualified for the state alpine skiing meet with a strong performance at the Section 5 meet at Afton Alps on Thursday, February 5. Lakes Area Alpine Ski Team head coach Matt Brunkow said Gieseke is the first Lakes Area girl skier to qualify for the state meet in team history. Five boys have previously qualified for state. “I am very proud of Katie and how hard she has worked to achieve this,” Brunkow said.
