"The good news is that we didn't have any new infestations in 2015," said Dave Rush, Douglas County Land and Resource Management director. After its first full open-water season on the books, the local aquatic invasive species (AIS) task force is noting the good news, but also quickly strategizing for 2016. During the Jan.19 board meeting, Rush provided Douglas County commissioners with preliminary stats on local AIS prevention efforts in 2015. Key in preventing the spread was setting up watercraft inspection stations at busy lake accesses.
Douglas County Commissioners rescinded their vote to layoff two county corrections office employees. The 4-1 vote to rescind happened during the board’s February 2 meeting; Commissioner Jerry Johnson voted no. The board will now take 60 days to gather more information before addressing the issue again at its April 5 meeting. Back on January 19, the board voted 5-0 to layoff two corrections office employees citing overstaffing .

Funk is a way of life for Alexandria native Spencer Christensen and his musical influences are being noticed. Christensen plays guitar in the Twin Cities-based progressive funk band, PHO, and last Friday, the group was invited to perform at Paisley Park — the Chanhassen studio of Minnesota music legend Prince. "It was super exciting to get that phone call, obviously," Christensen said. Prince reportedly took notice of PHO and caught the band's performances on YouTube.
The Kensington Runestone is steeped in mystery and its intrigue prompted a production crew to visit the area last week to shoot a commercial. Director Chris Bagnall and crew from Bullet Point Films, based in New York City, visited Kensington Rune Stone Park and downtown Alexandria Jan. 19-22 to shoot a commercial for Dodge Ram Trucks. The commercial stars Scott Wolter, a forensic geologist and host of History Channel's H2 series, America Unearthed.
During the January 19 board meeting, Douglas County commissioners unanimously approved the layoff of two corrections office workers. The employees — one case aide and one administrative assistant — were given 30 days' notice that their positions would be eliminated. Why? Commissioners cited overstaffing.
For the second year in a row, there were fewer cases of public assistance fraud in Douglas County, but more money was taken. Last year in Douglas County, 38 public assistance cases were referred to the county attorney's office for fraud investigation. Cases are referred to the county attorney's office by Douglas County Social Services financial workers, Housing and Redevelopment Authority staff, law enforcement and district court staff and the general public. There were 33 public assistance fraud cases reported in 2014 and 72 in 2013.
