The Jefferson High School (JHS) Carolers are gearing-up for another holiday season. This year marks the group's 50th anniversary. The Carolers were formed in 1962 by Murrae Freng and continue to be a community tradition. On Wednesday, September 19, 10th through 12th grade students at Jefferson High School in Alexandria attended a Texting and Driving Campaign. The students watched a video on the dangers of texting and driving called It Can Wait during EXCEL. Students were also given an opportunity to sign a banner during lunch, pledging not to text and drive. This banner will be hung in the entryway of Jefferson High School. (Contributed photo)

Campers discovered the world of critters and bugs at a recent 4-H Day Camp on July 18. Rain caused the location to move from Park Osagi on Lake Osakis, but it didn't put a damper on the kids' fun. As they learned about "creepy crawlies," day campers eagerly explored the bugs. Throughout the day, they made a huge web (pictured), spiders and butterflies and played games. Recently, nine students in grades 4-7 spent the week learning how to sew at a community education class taught by Jodi Hintzen, the Douglas County Extension 4-H Program coordinator. The participants learned how to sew and quilt a lap-sized rag quilt and were willing to continue sewing even when they had personally completed their own project. Elim Lutheran Church will hold its 114th annual Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4. It begins at 10:30 a.m. with a patriotic service with guest speaker Pastor Steven Ware. 
Following the service, a potluck dinner will be served at noon. The day will continue with old-fashioned games and activities for all ages.
The celebration has been a long-standing tradition at Elim Lutheran Church. Everyone is welcome. (Echo Press photo)

Lake Mary Troopers 4-H Club participated in a community pride project at Nordic Meadow Apartments complex, for young adults with disabilities, in Alexandria in May. The 4-H club members planted vegetables and flowers around the grounds of the apartment building. In addition, the members made and painted bluebird and wood duck houses, which they put up around the property. The 4-H members are pictured with one of the bluebird houses that they made. The Alexandria Marching Band had a successful outing last weekend, performing in two parades on Saturday, June 16.  First the band marched in the Owatonna Parade earning a 3rd place finish in class AA.  The band scored a 77.25 at Owatonna, which was its first parade of the season. That evening the band marched in the Buffalo Parade and won Grand Championship honors with a score of 79.9 out of a field of 14 bands. First Congregational United Church of Christ will host another "Sock Drop" street dance on Tuesday, June 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. located in the church parking lot between 6th and 7th avenues off Elm Street in Alexandria. The Jefferson High School (JHS) Choral Program will receive a commendation from the American Choral Director's Association (ACDA) of Minnesota in observance of the organization's 50-year anniversary.
