In a field in Solem Township last week, Stuart Wagenius, a conservation scientist at Chicago Botanic Garden, explained, “We know this plant was planted in 2003, we know its mom, its dad and grandmothers out in nature. And we know its [genetic] fitness. Every year we know the number of leaves that it had, the length of the longest leaf and the number of heads that it’s had.” They harvest the flower heads each fall.
