Wrestling: Zieske, Waldvogel named Co-MVP for wrestlers

The Osakis wrestling team had a young lineup this season that was just introducing a lot of athletes to the sport, but seniors Colton Waldvogel and Gage Zieske added experience and skill to the team on the way to great individual seasons.

After both seniors took first place at the section meet in their respective weight classes, Zieske went on to take second place at state in the 138-pound weight class and Waldvogel took fourth at state in the 170-pound class.

Zieske and Waldvogel were both named Most Valuable Wrestler at the team's awards banquet. Waldvogel (37-3) received the Osakis High School Pin Award for his team-leading 20 pins. He added 78 takedowns, 22 escapes while racking up 231 match points and 191 team points.

Zieske tormented opponents with his strength and athleticism as he Osakis' Most Escapes Award with his 30 escapes and set a new school record to win the Phil Benedict Takedown Award for his 221 takedowns. Zieske finished his season 44-2, totalling 532 match points and scoring 186 points for the team.

Junior Dominic Strom (15-13) won the Silverstreaks' Most Reversals Award with 15 season reversals. Seventh grader Kale Drevlow (9-16) was named the most improved wrestler. Freshman Logan Grove received the Silverstreak Award.

Sophomore Nate Kulzer had Osakis' third best individual record this year after going 24-13. He took third in the section tournament and senior Jeran Baker (17-18) and Strom each took sixth place.

The Silverstreaks ended the season overall with a 5-19 record.
