Volleyball: Brainerd erases early deficit against Alexandria

The Alexandria volleyball team won the first set, 27-25, against Brainerd on Thursday night, but the Warriors bounced back with three straight wins to take the match.

Brainerd (16-5, 9-2 Central Lakes Conference) tied things up with a 25-20 win in the second before taking the match with 25-23 and 25-17 wins in the third and fourth.

Avery Eckman led the way for the Warriors with 17 kills and 21 digs. Courtney Russell added 14 kills, and Madi Genz 10.

The Cardinals (11-14, 6-5 CLC) spread the ball around at the net as Erika Roderick finished with 44 assists. McKenzie Duwenhoegger had a team-high 14 kills, while Mya Lesnar had 11 and Kendra Hardy and Mia McGrane each finished with nine. Tessa McGrane had a team-high 16 digs.

Alexandria has just one game left on the regular-season schedule with Fergus Falls (3-19) coming to town on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals are seeded seventh in the Section 8-3A QRF rankings through after the Brainerd match, with those seedings not final yet. The tournament opens on Oct. 24.
