Volleyball: WCA makes second-place run in Wheaton

The West Central Area volleyball team came within one win of a championship at the Wheaton Tournament on Saturday.

The Knights swept both Ashby-Destiny Academy and Sisseton 2-0 to open the tournament, but a 2-0 loss to Park Christian in the championship dropped WCA to the second-place finish.

West Central Area made a statement early on, beating the Arrows 25-7 in the opening set before finishing the match with a 25-16 win in the second set. Hailey Bennett led the way, picking up seven of the team’s 12 aces in the match, while Kaitlyn Sanstead had 13 digs.

In the 25-13, 25-11 win over Sisseton, the Knights benefitted from Morgan Woodle’s 15 kills and Sanstead’s 21 digs, while another seven aces helped guide them to the championship.

It was there, however, where the Falcons eked out 25-22 and 25-23 wins to claim the championship despite the efforts of Sanstead and Kaleigh Anderson, who finished with 11 and eight digs, respectfully.
