Volleyball: Chargers see improved play in Browerville Tournament

The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team came back from the Browerville Tournament on Saturday with a 2-2 record.

The Chargers used a three-setter to beat Browerville (25-22, 22-25, 15-12) and took care of New York Mills in two (25-21, 29-27). Losses came to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (25-23, 25-23) and Verndale (25-18, 25-23).

Bailey Schaefer had a team-high 32 kills through the four matches. Madison Quinn had 61 assists and Sara Jacobson finished with 27 digs.

“The team was hoping to continue to improve on a number of things in Browerville,” B-E head coach Kelly Olson said. “Serving on the day was much better, as was our overall team defense. We saw good team play against New York Mills in our first match. The match was back and forth both sets, and with good serving and some timely blocks and kills we got the match win.”

The Chargers jumped out to a big lead against Browerville in the first set.

“Browerville had gained enough momentum to stay close enough to us and won the second set,” Olson said. “The third set, we regained our composure and won the match. Our last pool play match was against Verndale. Due to the fact we lost the set to Browerville, we needed to beat Verndale to win the pool. We came out flat and lost the first set. The second set was well played but a few errors at costly times and some defensive breakdowns saw us lose set two by two.”

That sent the Chargers into their championship round match against KMS.

“We played back and forth, and at the tail end of both sets we had the lead and lost it,” Olson said. “All day, we played tough competition and in each match we had the chance to get the win. We are steadily improving and with a young lineup with numerous first-year players, I like where we are at. Once we learn how to finish sets efficiently, we will see these close sets swing our way. Overall, a good time in the gym and we are looking forward to the next week’s matches in Rothsay on Tuesday and Underwood on Thursday, both on the road.”
