Volleyball: Chargers fall in three despite improved play

Bailey Schaefer

The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team ran into a section opponent it hadn’t seen in recent years, and Park Christian left by making an impression in a 3-0 sweep.

The Falcons (2-0) controlled the first set, 25-13, before fighting off the Chargers in 27-25 sets over the final two.

“Coming into tonight’s match, we wanted to play with focus and try to start putting together runs of good volleyball,” B-E coach Kelly Olson said. “We have been missing that the first three matches of the year. We did some really good things tonight, even in the first set when we lost 13-25. Obviously, there was a bigger shortage of the good, but the energy and focus seemed to be there.”

Olson felt the Chargers played better from top to bottom in the second and third sets.

“We had our chances to win those sets, but Park Christian made the plays where we did not,” Olson said. “I liked the fact we had chances to win close sets. We just lacked some fundamentals at inopportune times. Those times cost us the set wins.”

Sophomore Bailey Schaefer had 11 kills and two blocks to lead the Chargers at the net. Haddey Zastrow added five kills, while Madison Quinn had 20 assists and Kailee Klimek led from the back row with eight digs.

“I do have to say we played hard, and I think this is the first time the team has felt like they played volleyball for most of the match,” Olson said. “So, we get up tomorrow and go to practice and try to get better. We learned a little about what we need to do better in order to be better.”

The Chargers will now head to a tournament in Browerville on Saturday, where they open against New York Mills before playing Browerville and Verndale.
