Tennis: Cardinals roll to 4-1 with win over Rocori
The Alexandria girls tennis team continued its hot start to the season by improving to 4-1 with a 5-2 win over Rocori on Thursday night.
The Cardinals (3-0 Central Lakes Conference) swept the singles lineup as Brianna Holm led the charge at the first spot with a 6-4, 6-0 win. Laura Wilmesmeier won in two sets at second singles, and Sarah Jiang did the same at the fourth spot. The tightest match came at third singles, but junior Annie Harding put away Megan Schroder, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
“Brianna was in a tight match and found herself down 3-4 in the first set before she figured some things out and rattled off nine straight games enroute to her point at first singles,” head coach Dave Ronning said. “Laura used some good net play to overcome her opponent at second singles and kept her unbeaten record in tact with a straight set win. Annie fought hard and won her first set in a breaker, then cruised in the second set at third singles. Sarah started well and rolled through her opponent at fourth singles surrendering just two games.”
The Cardinals’ lone doubles win came from Joria Downing and Kaylee Svee at the second spot in a 7-5, 6-2 final.
“Our third doubles team of Taylor (Sayre) and Autumn (Botz) were the hard-luck loser as they dropped the first set, won the second set, had a 5-4 lead in the third set, but then lost three straight games and the point, 5-7. Madison Ressemann and Abby (Sater) at first doubles didn't play their best match and looked a bit rusty from the long layoff as they fell in straight sets.”
Rocori is a young team that features 13 freshmen.
“They will be a team to contend with in the near future,” Ronning said.
The Cardinals will now host a triangular on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
