Tennis: Sixth-ranked Osakis tests itself in tourneys ahead of match with Minnewaska
The Osakis girls tennis team challenged itself in a couple of tournaments last week and came back with a first-place finish in the Hi-Way 10 field and a fifth-place finish at Delano-Orono.
The Silverstreaks went up against a host of bigger schools at Delano-Orono as Brainerd (34 points), Orono (27), Roseville (24) and Delano (23) all finished in front of them after Osakis totaled 20 points in the eight-team field.
In singles, Mara VanNyhuis brought home the top finish by taking second place at the fourth spot, while Alexa Lien was third at third singles. Tia Dykema finished sixth at first singles and Lauren Scherr got sixth at second singles.
Shea Olson and Camryn Hoffarth paced the doubles lineup with a second-place finish at first doubles. Muriah Adolphsen, Helena Zajac and Makenzie Lien split duties to finish second at fourth doubles, as well. Kennedy George and Kadyn Triebenbach were sixth at second doubles and Sydney Rach, Brittany Dietrich and Lexi Spychalla split duties to take sixth at third doubles.
The Silverstreaks dominated the Hi-Way 10 Tournament in Staples and Wadena on Aug. 22 by winning seven of the eight positions. That led to 52 team points, easily in front of Rocori (37), Staples (33), Perham (32), Detroit Lakes (30), Sartell (30), Wadena-Deer Creek (19) and Little Falls (19).
Dykema, Scherr, Lien and VanNyhuis all took first place in the top four singles spots, respectively. Olson and Hoffarth were first at first doubles. Kennedy George and Triebenbach were first at second doubles. Adolphsen and Zajac did the same at fourth doubles and Rach and Dietrich were fifth at third doubles.
The fast start to the season for Osakis has the Silverstreaks ranked sixth in the Aug. 26 Minnesota Tennis Coaches Association rankings for Class A. They host eighth-ranked Minnewaska today, Monday, at 3 p.m. in Osakis.
