The Alexandria girls tennis team kicked off its season in Bemidji on Wednesday with a triangular split against Bemidji and Thief River Falls.

The Cardinals opened the year with a tight 4-3 win over the Lumberjacks, while the encore saw the Prowlers take a 5-2 decision over AAHS.

“The girls fought hard at most spots and had a good first match day,” Alex head coach Dave Ronning said. “We still have a lot of work to do if we want to compete well this year, so we will go back to work and get prepared for our home quad this Friday.”

Against Bemidji, Alexandria opened up with wins at Nos. 2-4 singles. At second singles, Laura Wilmesmeier defeated Taylor Offerdahl 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4), Annie Harding took down Tatum Offerdahl 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3, and Sarah Jiang topped Carley Swanson-Gard 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4.

Then at No. 1 doubles, Madison Ressemann and Abby Sater teamed up for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Lexi Leitner and Hannah Nelson. It proved to be decisive as the Cardinals clinched the 4-3 victory with the win.

Bemidji picked up a single win No. 1, where Savannah Haugen beat Brianna Holm 6-1, 6-4. In doubles, the No. 2 BHS team of Bethany Chaterton and Aften Schmidt took down Alex’s Kaylee Svee and Joria Downing 2-6, 6-4, (11-9), and the No. 3 Cardinal tandem of Ellie Murphy and Taylor Sayre fell 6-1, 6-3 to Bemidji’s Paige Anderson and Chloe Hasbargen.

After the win, Alexandria moved on to play Thief River Falls, where the Cardinals met defeat for the first time on the young season.

Holm and Wilmesmeier won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively -- Holm winning 6-2, 6-1 and Wilmesmeier a 6-1, 6-0 victor -- but they were the only two that AAHS picked up. The Prowlers won at Nos. 3-4 singles, and then swept the doubles, to walk away with a 5-2 victory.

Alexandria will return to action at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, at home for the AAHS Quad.
