Tennis: Osakis sweeps opening tri at Pequot Lakes

Sydney Rach1 / 2
Kadyn Triebenbach2 / 2

The Osakis girls tennis team jumpstarted its season on Saturday by getting pushed before coming away with a 2-0 record at the Pequot Lakes Triangular.

The Silverstreaks took care of Perham-New York Mills in a 6-1 match. Host Pequot Lakes pushed them in the other match, but Osakis came away with a 4-3 win after a decisive victory by Sydney Rach and Kadyn Triebenbach at second doubles. Rach and Triebenbach were down 2-5 in the second set but persevered for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-6 win.

“They showed a lot of heart in coming back to win that match for us and helping us get a 4-3 team win,” head coach Ryan Maddock said. “Shea Olson and Camryn Hoffarth were dominating in their two first doubles wins. We had quite a few girls get their first varsity action today, performing well in their matches.”

Senior Lauren Scherr was out for the opener after surgery to get her wisdom teeth removed. She would normally be at second singles, but Alexa Lien stepped in and went 1-1 on the day.

Olson and Hoffarth joined Rach and Triebenbach in getting a doubles win after a 6-3, 6-1 win at the first spot against Pequot Lakes. In singles, Mara VanNyhuis won at the third spot and Kennedy George took fourth singles to help secure the team win.

Things came a little easier against Perham-NYM as Osakis swept the doubles lineup and took three of four in singles. Tia Dykema, Lien and George all won in straight sets in singles.

Rach and Triebenbach went to a tie-breaking third and won 6-4, 2-6, 10-6 at second doubles. Olson and Hoffarth won 6-3, 6-1 at first doubles, while Brittany Dietrich and Lexi Spychalla dropped just one game in their third doubles win.
