Cards swim to tie against Melrose

Addison Rodel

Due to pool problems at Discovery Middle School, the Alexandria girls swimming and diving team hasn’t been able to practice for days. But that didn’t stop them from tying Melrose in Tuesday’s dual at DMS.

“For many, many years, Alexandria swimmers and divers have struggled in competition with this Central Minnesota powerhouse,” AAHS head coach Kathy Walker said of Melrose. “The girls definitely rose to the occasion and came out with a very strong opener. The balance of depth and excellence led to many exciting races during the meet.”

Senior Addison Rodel led the way with wins in the 200 IM and the 100 Fly, finishing with respective times of 2:32.52 and 1:06.55. Senior Lauren Russell added a win in the 500 Free with a 6:04.79 mark, while sophomore McKenna Horan picked up a win in the 100 Back with a 1:06.12 mark.

The Cardinals also notched a number of second-place finishes. Horan’s time of 2:10.43 did the trick in the 200 Free, and she was part of the 400 Free Relay team alongside Jadeya Peterson, Russell and Grace Karrow that took second with a 4:05.54 time.

Elsewhere for Alexandria, the 200 Medley Relay consisting of Anna Dokter, Hattie Galloway, Rodel and Karrow combined for a 2:03.53 mark and second place. The 200 Free Relay team of Peterson, Horan, Rodel and Galloway came in second with a 1:49.52 time, as well.

Individually, Galloway’s time of 26.30 in the 50 Free was good for second, while Summer Overland (500 Free) and Jewel Sainz (1 Meter Diving) matched the finish with 6:16.02 and 163.85 marks, respectively.

Eighteen Cardinals qualified for November’s section meet: seniors Rodel, Peterson and Russell; juniors Savannah Overland, Staci Nohl, Brienna Timm, Kaylee Meyer and Mackenzie Weigel; sophomores Horan, Galloway, Sainz, Allea Balcome and Anna Doktor; freshmen Karrow, Sidney Johnson, Aleah Doktor and Halle Pease; and eighth-grader Summer Overland.
